This is a solemn time for the Nigerian polo community, especially for the prestigious Kano Polo Club, which is currently in mourning following the passing of its Life President, patron, player, and oldest member, Alhaji Aminu Dantata.
In announcing the sad news, Kano Polo Club described his death as the end of an era for the noble sport, not just in Kano, but across Nigeria. The club noted that Alhaji Dantata’s passing marks the loss of a pillar whose legendary contributions to polo — the sport of kings — will be incredibly hard to replace.
“We deeply mourn the passing of our respected President, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata — a visionary leader, industrial giant, and passionate supporter of polo. His unwavering dedication to the Kano Polo Club and the wider community leaves behind a lasting legacy of excellence, honor, and selfless service,” the club’s statement read.
Senior members of the club described him as the last of a great generation, following the earlier deaths of his fellow players including the late Emir of Katsina, HRH Alhaji Kabir Usman, General Hassan Katsina, and Kurt Walta.
Polo clubs across the nation have extended their condolences to Kano Polo Club, praying for God’s strength for the bereaved family and the club as they endure this irreplaceable loss.
Similarly, the management of Kano Pillars FC — another sports organization that benefited from Alhaji Dantata’s generosity alongside polo and horse racing — has also expressed deep sympathy. They extended heartfelt condolences to the Dantata family, the Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi II, and the entire people of Kano State, mourning the loss of a highly respected businessman and elder statesman.
