The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has officially prohibited politicians and public officeholders from making political speeches during church services and religious events.
The directive was issued by the Primate of the Church, Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba, during the Episcopal Consultation held in the Diocese of Nike, Enugu, and was further detailed in a memo released on Friday, July 12, 2025, by the Church’s Director of Communication, Korede Akintunde.
According to the Church, the decision was made in response to the growing trend of politicians using church gatherings to promote partisan views, which it says undermines the spiritual purpose of worship.
“The Church remains open to everyone, including politicians and government officials,” the memo stated. “However, worship services are not political platforms and must remain sacred and focused on God.”
The directive as contained in the memo:
Church leaders and officiating ministers must avoid making political statements or displaying loyalty to any political party.
Guests, especially political figures, should not be allowed to speak from the church lectern, which is consecrated for the reading of Scripture.
Clergy and officials must not praise or promote any guest in ways that could damage the Church’s reputation.
Any invited guest wishing to address the congregation must first consult with church leadership and receive guidance on appropriate conduct.
Archbishop Ndukuba reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to supporting national development through prayer and counsel, but warned against using the pulpit for political gain.
“The Church must remain the light of the world and the salt of the earth. We will continue to uphold our nation in prayer and guide leaders without becoming partisan,” he said.
The new directive is expected to guide Anglican churches across the country in maintaining neutrality and upholding the sacredness of Christian worship.
