Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Monday, urged the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council to ensure fairness and transparency in the selection of the next Awujale of Ijebuland.
The throne became vacant following the passing of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, after an extraordinary reign of over 65 years.
Speaking after a meeting with members of the Chiefs-in-Council in Iperu, Governor Abiodun emphasized the need to fill the vacant stool without delay, noting that “nature abhors a vacuum.” He assured that his administration would fully support any candidate chosen by the kingmakers at the conclusion of the nomination process.
“The process of installing a new Awujale has already commenced. Our discussions centered on ensuring that the steps laid down in the Laws of Ijebuland are strictly followed, so that every detail is properly addressed. I am pleased that we are all on the same page, which should put to rest the rumours that have been circulating,” he said.
The governor expressed optimism that the succession process would be peaceful and devoid of rancour, stressing that all contenders would be given a level playing field. He praised the Chiefs-in-Council for their integrity and for contributing to the stability and success of the late monarch’s reign.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Abiodun explained that he deliberately waited for the 40-day mourning period to pass before convening the gathering. “What is most important is that the chiefs remain deeply committed and united. This was my first meeting with them since the passing of our revered monarch, and I used the opportunity to commiserate with them and reassure them of my confidence. There is no division within the Council; they are working harmoniously, and I am very pleased with the outcome of today’s meeting,” he stated.
Also speaking, the Olootu Olowa and Deputy Chairman of the Council, Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso, reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to peace and stability. He assured that members would continue to work together in unity to promote the progress and wellbeing of Ijebuland.
